The Power of Natural Light: How an Atrium Transforms This San Francisco Home

Nestled in the heart of NOPA, San Francisco, this impeccably renovated four-bedroom modern masterpiece offers a harmonious blend of architectural sophistication and contemporary luxury. Bathed in natural light, the home showcases a dramatic central atrium, premium finishes throughout, and a fluid indoor-outdoor layout designed for both comfort and style.

Q&A with Kyle Hill

Q: What design elements did you use to complement the atrium and the home's character?

A: “We made sure that the lighting throughout the house was low-profile in certain areas, so we didn't detract from it. Then, we also kept the furniture modern and low-profile. So that way, when you walk into the home, you're getting unobstructed views straight through the atrium to the back of the house. If we had gone with a higher, taller furniture, we would have blocked those views, and it would have made it feel more closed off.”

Q: What modern conveniences or smart home features did you add without compromising aesthetics?

A: “We added modern conveniences, such as an updated gas range and updated all the appliances. We also updated all the plumbing fixtures and other things to help ensure that everything is eco-friendly and has all the features that today's home buyers are looking for.”

Q: What materials or finishes did you choose and why?

A: “We chose porcelain and marble tiles throughout all the updated bathrooms. This choice is based on important factors: It creates a nice aesthetic, is very cost-effective, easy to clean, and has a lot of longevity.”

Q: What design elements did you introduce in the 2025 updates to enhance the home’s modern aesthetic?

A: “We added cherry hardwood flooring throughout the whole home, not just the main floor. We played with bold patterns and intense veining tile work for the primary bathroom. We took away some of the cabinetry in the kitchen and added floating shelves just to make the space feel more open, more conducive to entertaining, and let the light in.”

Q: If you could describe the new personality of the home after the 2025 updates, what would it be?

A: “Sexy but approachable.”

Q: What was your favorite part of this project?

A: “It is getting to work on such an architecturally prominent project in the city by one of the most renowned architects we have here and just bringing a new modern layer to it.”
